Low Level Trough Causing Bad Weather
By Cathy Lashley

The heavy showers and inclement weather currently affecting the island are being caused by a low level trough in the south of the Eastern Caribbean.

This was stated today by Senior Meteorologist at the Barbados Meteorological Services, Clairmonte Williams, who said the conditions are expected to persist for another 12 to 18 hours, until Thursday, September 9.

As a result, Mr. Williams warned Barbadians that some pockets of moderate to heavy showers, periods of rain and isolated thunderstorms can be expected.

He, therefore, advised residents to exercise caution and to take all necessary precautionary measures. clashley@barbados.gov.bb

Keep Moving Exercise Event At Browne's Beach This Saturday
By Lisa Bayley

Come and Keep Moving!

That's the call of the Ministry of Health and the National Task Force on Physical Activity and Exercise as they host the second Keep Moving Barbados exercise event, at Browne's Beach, this Saturday, September 11.

The event, which is being held to mark Caribbean Wellness Day, will run from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.  It will include beach volleyball, cricket, aerobics, line dancing, paddleball, skipping, beach boot camp sessions, a beach walk led by Coastal Zone Management Unit staff and a hike guided by the Barbados National Trust to some of the historic sites of Bridgetown.

While speaking about the need for the event, Senior Health Promotions Officer at the Ministry of Health, Denise Carter-Taylor, reported that the last risk factor survey conducted by the Ministry in 2007 showed that the participation of Barbadians in regular physical activity was still below 50 per cent.

"Although we see persons on the highway and on the Garrison, not enough Barbadians are active on a regular basis.  So we know that we have a lot of work to do to get more people up and out and exercising regularly.  This is what the Task Force is trying to do.  Show people how to exercise and how they can do it at a low cost or no cost and sustain it," she said.

Meanwhile, Lifestyle Fitness Coach and Task Force member, Kenneth Griffith, urged Barbadians of all ages to take part in the mass exercise event to learn some of the ways they could shape their own exercise programme.

"Physical activity will contribute to a healthier lifestyle and a better quality of life, we want to encourage Barbadians to get active and stay active.  So, when they come out to the beach they are going to use their bodies and we will show them how they can elevate their heart rate, increase blood flow, strengthen muscles and increase flexibility by being involved in fun activities, because if it's fun, you're probably going to make it a lifestyle habit," he explained.

Caribbean Wellness Day is being celebrated under the theme, Love That Body; Move That Body, and was sanctioned by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government at the Chronic Disease Summit of Port of Spain in 2007.  It was designed as a starting point for a plan of action to reduce the high incidence of CNCDs in the Caribbean.  lbayley@barbados.gov.bb

Environment Minister Hopeful About Energy Conservation
By Carol Gaskin

"A   revolution!"

This is what Minister of the Environment, Water Resources and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe, believes that the joint Government and Central Bank-sponsored    Alternative Energy Workshop signals.

Addressing the final day of the forum this morning, Minister Lowe said: "Today, we celebrate what can only be considered a revolution. Your presence here gives me hope that Barbadians are no longer comfortable with... energy generation waste management methods and the wasteful approach of the past, but that we are ready to move forward to a more sustainable way of energy generation, conservation and use."

Citing Harrison's Cave as an example of the feasibility of incorporating green principles into major development projects without compromising the quality of the finished product, Minister Lowe said the challenge was for other developers to "be as green" in their developments, and for Barbadians, in general, to "live more green"  and to do their part in  helping to preserve  our natural heritage.

Dr. Lowe told delegates at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, that the Vaucluse Solid Waste facility was a key component in the modernisation of the management of solid waste in Barbados.

"Solid waste represents a resource from which we can recover energy. The inclusion of a waste-to-energy facility and a landfill gas-to-energy facility into our solid waste mix will allow us to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels, generate electricity and significantly extend the life of our landfills," he underlined.

Pledging the Ministry's continued efforts towards the development of the green economy, Minister Lowe underscored the need to be cognisant of the environment and to seek to minimise negative effects.

"It is our collective responsibility to get involved in greener approaches to construction, recycling, composting, waste minimisation and the generation of green energy. Take up the challenge and I give you my assurance that the Ministry of the Environment, Water Resources and Drainage will work along with you... as we continue to work towards the protection and enhancement of our built and natural environment," he  assured. cgaskin@barbados.gov.bb
